Why laser hair removal at OFF & ON?

WE HAVE ACTUAL LASER, LIKE PEW PEW PEW LASER.

In an unregulated market with machines that greatly range in price and can be sold on Trade Me to unskilled, untrained operators (eek), it all can end in tears and as much hair as you started with.

There is a lot of confusion and misconceptions about permanent hair removal – many people think IPL, VPL, and laser are all the same thing... don’t get us started. Put simply they are not laser. Laser is laser. But we don’t just have any laser… we have one of the highest medical-grade laser to guarantee successful results faster, for more people, with less pain.

WE DON’T DISCRIMINATE.

We are a diverse bunch here in New Zealand and previously there have been big limitations to what skin types can have successful laser hair removal. Unlike rival devices, the our device contains not one, but two laser systems to enable us to effectively look after every skin type.

IT IS FAST AND COMFORTABLE.

It is a myth that laser should be painful. If the best cooling is used, the treatment is both manageable and less painful than waxing. With the Candela Gentle Max Pro we can deliver a far more comfortable and in many cases, virtually painless experience due to the patented Dynamic Cooling Device™ (DCD™).

WE HAVE THE HAIR REMOVAL KNOWLEDGE & EXPERTISE.

You know that at OFF we love one thing - getting rid of hair. Our technicians are dedicated to one thing just like our machine – laser hair removal. The laser team love their Gentle Max Pro more than a boyfriend… in fact we name them as our boyfriends – we have Carlos, Victor, Patrick and Gavin and more!

Experience is very different from proper education and quality training. It is a sad fact that in New Zealand literally anyone can purchase and operate a machine without any formal qualification, knowledge or skill. Our team are certified to high standards in NZ to be Level 3 Advanced Laser Technicians. They are also certified to the Queensland regulations in Australia (the only state to regulate laser safety in Australia). We are also pretty proud to have our own Candela Clinical Consultant and that our Laser team leader has more than 12 years of experience working in the top laser clinics overseas.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

  • The OFF & ON philosophy for laser hair removal is about maximising the laser journey to get you to the end result of dolphin smoothness as efficiently, effectively and safely as possible. This is why we encourage a course of 8 sessions.

Every session counts and is customised to have the cumulative result. We review and modify your course as you go through your laser journey – that is where our ninja expertise in hair removal comes in.

It is personal – every person is different in what they require. It is our job to navigate this with you rather than have a one size fits all approach via stand alone sessions which ultimately waste time and money.

We have a comprehensive approach yet flexible options to make your laser journey fit in with your life and your budget… and get the best results at the same time – win win!

  • Being laser hair removal experts, our team will recommend you a treatment plan. In most cases, you will be purchasing an 8 session package.

If you would just like a top up you can purchase a single session, otherwise you also have the option of purchasing a 3 session package.

  • Nothing’s too small or too big in our eyes. Our team know that there are some areas on your body that can be harder to talk about. Our sneaky patches are areas that are no bigger than the size of the palm of your hand. This includes areas such as your snail trail, areola, toes or fingers.

  • For two or more treatment areas purchased at the same time for laser, you get a 10% discount. The purchase must be on 3 or 8 session courses.

  • Laser removes the hair by a process called selective photothermolysis. The light energy from the laser is transferred into thermal energy in the hair follicle, with the laser energy targeting melanin, the pigmented region in the hair follicle.

Heat from the laser is absorbed by the melanin in the hair resulting in the follicle being destroyed.

OFF & ON uses Candela’s Dynamic Cooling Device™ (DCD™), during the treatment which means skin is further protected and cooled providing clients with greater comfort, whilst enabling us to treat hairs more effectively.

  • If you have dark hair on your face and body and also prone to ingrown hairs.

If you find traditional methods of hair removal difficult or inconvenient or want quick permanent hair removal.

All skin types are suitable for laser hair removal including darker skin. Our dual platform laser treats all skin types.

The rule is that the hair needs to be darker than the skin. The darker the hair the better. Blonde, grey, white or red hair cannot be treated.

Your medical history will be taken at the consult to check you are medically suitable.

  • Each treatment by any energy based technology (Laser, IPL, VPL etc) is technically permanent hair ‘reduction’, due to the targeting of follicles only in certain stages of the growth cycle.

However our equipment and training delivers incredible results and that’s why the vast majority of our customers can expect to walk away with permanent hair reduction for life after our standard course of just 8 sessions.

  • Because it is permanent and able to be specifically targeted to the hair follicle. Other forms of hair removal are either temporary, or not as effective (e.g. IPL). We have so many clients who wish they had done this years ago due to the savings of money and time they experience over the long run. The results from laser cannot be matched by any other hair removal method.

  • The cost of IPL equipment is a lot cheaper than laser equipment and IPL equipment is more versatile as it can perform a number of skin treatments, including hair removal. So really is an 'all-in-one' or ‘jack-of-all-trades’ machine.

OFF & ON uses specific laser equipment for the sole purpose of hair removal. We use up-to-date equipment for safe and effective hair removal, to provide our clients with the best possible treatment.

  • IPL is often mistakenly referred to as a laser. IPL stands for Intense Pulsed Light. The broad spectrum light passes over the whole treatment area, in comparison to an actual laser where the energy is far more concentrated.

Treatment performed using an IPL can be less effective for hair removal. Laser uses just one wavelength to target hair follicles. Therefore laser energy is more focused than an IPL. The treatment settings with our laser machines are more accurate and precise so we can individualise treatments for each client. When IPL is used for hair removal there is also a greater risk of causing damage to the skin, such as changes to skin pigmentation or burning.

  • Our laser machines have a cooling device to cool the skin so you don’t feel the heat from the laser as significantly. Candela’s Dynamic Cooling Device™ (DCD™) sprays cryogen gas into the skin before the laser to make it as comfortable as possible.

There may be a slight discomfort but it is completely tolerable. Many say a 3 out of 10, and we can confidently say that it is far less painful than waxing.

  • In order to understand laser hair removal you need to understand the hair growth cycle. which has three distinct stages: waxing hair growth cycles.

    Anagen: active growth phase

    Catagen: regressive phase

    Telegen: resting phase

It is ONLY during the ANAGEN active growth phase where the laser permanently disables hair growth. Over a course of 8 treatments at the correct weekly intervals, we can target that phase of growth.

The cycle for each hair is not sychronised which is why its important to have multiple treatments and at the correct time for each body area for optimal results. e.g. every 4 weeks for facial hair, every 6 weeks for body.

  • Treatments are dependent on the individual. It is also dependent on medical background and hormonal changes in the body.

Most clients are complete after 8 sessions, whilst some require more. Usually face treatments will require more sessions than body. Women are predisposed to grow new hair on the face as they age.

Changes in hormones, menopause and medications all increase growth and subsequently top up maintenance sessions may be required.

  • A patch test is done on a small section of the different body areas you want treated. The patch test provides us with the optimal temperature for your skin and it checks the sensitivity of the laser to your skin.

For tanned/darker skin, you must wait a minimum of 1 -2 weeks after your patch test before your first session. We are looking for any adverse reactions in this time. The patch test is complimentary. No self tan, perfumed or aerosol products should be applied to the skin prior to the patch test.

  • There are three main steps in a typical session:

The area will be wiped and marked out.

The area will be treated with a laser applicator with a built in cooling device to ease pain and reduce sensitivity.

At the end of the session, aloe vera will be applied and sun protection if necessary. The hair must be shaved 24 hours prior to treatment as the hair needs to be as short as possible to make the treatment effective and comfortable.

  • You should have short visible hair when you come in for a consultation so we can better advise you on your hair type and treatment. However there is no need to grow your hair out for regular treatments. You may shave as many times as you wish. This will not affect the results.

  • The duration of the treatment depends on surface area. For example, approximate treatment times:

    Brazilian: 30 minutes

    Underarms: 15 minutes

    Full leg: 45 minutes

    Full face: 30 minutes

  • During the initial 8 treatments, we recommend treatments every 3 - 4 weeks for the face and every 6 - 8 weeks for the body.

If further treatments are required after the standard course of 8, the time between treatments vary from client to client.

  • You will need to remember some basic rules when commencing laser hair removal.

Shave, shave and shave only – no more waxing, threading, plucking or electrolysis. Remember laser will not work if you remove the hair from the root. If you have removed the hair from the root you will need to wait 4 weeks before your first laser session.

Your hair will continue to grow after treatment and shed around three weeks post treatment. You can shave in between.

You will be given an advice card at the consultation which you must follow before and after each session to get the best and safest results.

  • After the treatment you can get temporary erytema (redness) and temporary perifollicular oedema (swelling/lumps), however, any initial reactions should settle down within 48 hours. Aloe vera and SPF should be used to reduce such irritation.

There is a very slight risk of hyper or hypo-pigmentation, darkening or lightening of the skin, which is why it is important to protect skin from the sun with an SPF 30 or above.

Following our pre and post care instructions is vital, particularly to avoid any adverse reaction such as a heat reaction or blister, caused by excess heat before or after layered on top of the treated area e.g. hot shower, sun exposure etc.

  • You will need to give us a full medical history at the consult and we only commence treatment if we are confident you are a medically suitable for it. There are certain contraindications to laser which mean you cannot have the treatment. Some of these are: pregnancy, roaccutane users, recently had a peel or laser resurfacing. We will refer you to a doctor if necessary for clearance.

  • One of the problems associated with PCOS is excessive hair growth. At OFF & ON we have successfully carried out laser hair removal on many clients with PCOS. Laser hair removal keeps excess growth under control and gets rid of stubble and thick hair. PCOS clients may need ongoing maintenance treatments.

  • Our laser course pricing, relative to our single session prices, is based on the purchase of 3 or 8 treatments - effectively a 'bulk buy' discount. For us to offer this great value, the terms of our laser courses is that the course is non-refundable and all course treatments must be redeemed within 18 months of the first treatment.

Should for some reason you need to stop treatment temporarily (e.g. pregnancy), have a chat with us and we can discuss putting your course on hold.
